JARS
JARS (Justin Purtill, Anna Elva, Reed Mathis & Scott Guberman) is a collective of veteran improvisers exploring the psychedelic Grateful Dead & Jerry Garcia extended songbook with fearless creativity. Featuring bassist/guitarist Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Tea Leaf Green, Electric Beethoven), keyboardist Scott Guberman (Phil Lesh & Friends, The Gilmour Project), bassist/guitarist Justin Purtill (Residente, Stu Allen, Steve Kimock), and drummer Anna Elva (a Bay Area mainstay known for her deep grooves and improvisational fire), JARS blends jazz, rock, folk, and experimental traditions into boundary-pushing, exploratory performances rooted in the spirit of the Grateful Dead and beyond.
Justin Purtill is a dynamic and genre-blending bassist, guitarist, and songwriter known for his improvisational style and expressive musicianship. A seasoned collaborator and performer, he has toured internationally with Residente and appeared at major festivals including the Latin Grammys, Austin City Limits, and Vive Latino. As a sideman, he has performed with artists across the jazz, folk, and jam scenes—including Stu Allen, Melvin Seals & JGB, Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis, and Leo Genovese, among others. He has also shared the stage with artists such as Hassan Hakmoun and Esperanza Spalding, further reflecting his versatility across genres. In addition to his rich solo discography, Justin continues to balance a vibrant career as both a performer and an educator, blending latin pop, jazz, folk, and experimental music into a singular artistic voice.
Anna Elva (drums) brings dynamic energy and deep-pocket grooves to the mix, with a knack for psychedelic improvisation. Born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Anna is a versatile percussionist with a relentless sense of rhythm. She is known for her ability to drive a jam into uncharted territory. Anna can be found on stage with some of the Bay Area's most notable jam/improvisational rock musicians like Reed Mathis, Stu Allen, Matt Hartle, Mark Karan, Joe Craven, Scott Guberman, Jon Chi, Alex Jordan and bands such as China Dolls, American Beauties, Smokedaddies, Like a Rose, Lovin' Dead, Jenerator and many others. Anna also performs the music of Phish, Zappa and Grateful Dead across the country with Marcus Rezak. She is the proud mother to Levon and honored to be director/drum instructor at Music Time in Livermore.
Reed Mathis is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser whose career spans straight-ahead jazz, jam rock, classical reinterpretation, and beyond. With a foundation in classical training and a career rooted in adventurous collaboration, he continues to push musical boundaries. Over the years, he has been a central force in Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Tea Leaf Green, and Electric Beethoven, while also performing with projects such as 7 Walkers and Billy & the Kids, both of which featured Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, alongside a wide range of musicians from the jam and jazz worlds.
Scott Guberman broke into the Grateful Dead scene at the turn of the millennium. He first gained recognition as a Hammond organist performing heavily with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and former Grateful Dead keyboardist, Tom Constanten; and touring with Grateful Dead’s final keyboardist, Vince Welnick. Scott began playing with Phil Lesh and Friends in 2015, most notably during the re-creation shows that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. Guberman was also a member of Lesh’s band Communion. Now a staple of the Bay Area's thriving music scene, Guberman has played with just about every band and musician that’s a part of it. When not touring and playing across the U.S. with almost every professional band that plays the music of the Grateful Dead and more, Guberman tours internationally with The Gilmour Project and Live Dead and Brothers.
